Good News Is Immensely Inspiring!

In an earlier post, I said negative emotions are a signal that one is Off Purpose in life. This was actually oversimplified but they can be signals that we must not ignore but Do Something To Get On-Purpose.  Thinking about my most recent post, my teacher in the Conservation Movement and International Relations told me of her greatly admired “tireless advocate for global peace and environment protection” Richard Falk, I can see a contrast between my irresponsible avoidance of  the 6 o’clock Ain’t it awful! News, and more “activist” style.   If the mind interprets Ain’t it awful! News”, by raising unpleasant feelings. Yet, Accepting bad news and associated emotions, is at least staying in touch with reality, which is an indication of sanity!  This acceptance is vital for any constructive action.  In some of my earlier posts, I mentioned Dr. Viktor Frankl’s famous quote: “The Meaning of Life is derived by taking responsibility for the challenges set before us.” Yet to the majority of media watchers, they are helpless in their own eyes, because of the presentation designed to maximize, horror and indignation, because in media parlance, “If it bleeds, it leads!”   No kidding, it is a make or break competition for MONEY!

The public only sees impossible challenges!  Yet, behind the scenes of ambulances and injuries, even to police, there is an optimistic thrust.  One of Sheldrake’s morphogenic fields in the collective subconscious, is being fed from outside of Media range!  For example,  Gross National Happiness in Bhutan: the big idea from a tiny state that could change the world.  Bhutan measures prosperity by gauging its citizens’ happiness levels, not the GDP. Now its ideas are attracting interest at the UN climate change conference in Doha. I noticed Canada was looking at this some time ago.  Also, how about Global Alliance for Rights of Nature?

They state:  ” We urge the organizers of Earth Summit/Rio +20:

  • to call upon all States, regional bodies, organizations and individuals participating in Rio +20 to adopt the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth and to actively support its  implementation through law; and
  • to include Plenary and working sessions on how to facilitate sustainable development in harmony with Nature by recognizing, implementing and defending the rights of Nature/ Mother Earth.”
  • Rights of Nature – Restoring natural balance for a sustainable future.

Here is a rethink of my avoidance of Ain’t it awful! News.My avoidance was a mind virus!  If the mind interprets Ain’t it awful! News”, by raising unpleasant feelings, we are rendering ourselves to be powerless. Yet, Accepting bad news and associated emotions, is at least staying in touch with reality, which is an indication of sanity, produced this time by the mind virus!  This acceptance is vital for any constructive action.  In some of my earlier posts, I mentioned Dr Viktor Frankl’s famous quote: “The Meaning of Life is derived by taking responsibility for the challenges set before us.” Yet to the majority of media watchers are helpless in their own eyes, because the presentation is designed to maximize, horror and indignation.  This is because in media parlance, “If it bleeds, it leads!”   No kidding, this is a make or break competition for MONEY!

Nevertheless, I have learned that his avoidance strategy leaves me uninspired.  An attitude of acceptance is more powerful. It goes like this: “Mindfulness training teaches us to be aware of ourselves, including negative emotions and to first be aware of a feeling in the present moment.

  • Next how is this affecting our body?  A range of nasties can alarm our sympathetic nervous system (the fight or flight mechanism) and if this is the case, we must decide to take slow deep breaths, with long exhaling to calm it down.
  • Then we can ask our minds what initiative is toward being On-Purpose.

Brene’ Brown has published The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are. As a long time researcher of Shame and Fear she points to these are the Dark side of Vulnerability and she states Love and Connection are the Light Side of Vulnerability. She would wish us all to find out the things that get in the way of our being On-Purpose and happy.

Of course, when we accept Vulnerability and are truly ourselves, the love and connection are inspiring and when we accept Vulnerability of being who we are, we find people enjoy our company!

PS: MORE GOOD NEWS! The Cuban government responded to a food crisis in September 1993 by eliminating the majority of state farms and turning them into basic  units of cooperative production. Much of the 80 per cent of all farmland that was once held by the state was turned over to the workers and re-established as worker-owned enterprises. Although peasants did not own the land, they were allowed to rent the land indefinitely and free of charge as long as they continued to meet production quotas for their key crops.

Food crops produced in excess of these quotas could be freely sold at farmers markets, thereby providing a price incentive for farmers to effectively use new organic technologies such as biofertilisers, earthworms, compost and the integration of grazing animals. Farmers also revived traditional techniques such as intercropping and manuring in order to increase production yields.

  1. It’s clear that I omitted Ecuador as being responsible for the “Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth” proposal for Global Alliance for Rights of Nature mentioned above.

  2. Once again, thank you Paul for bringing these points front of mind.
I agree with your strategy, and as someone who deals with ‘bad news’ and multiple times every day (in my professional life), I knew a few years ago that I needed to address the repeated “alarm” trigger to my sympathetic nervous system or else I was on the road to a short life. I am so tuned to it now, that I can feel it like a rush of hormones flooding around my body. I don’t know if this is actually what is happening, but the mental picture helps me to recognize it and not get lost in the feeling.
My big help in calming dangerous trigger came from reading ‘Buddha’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom’ b y Rick Hanson … who I know you have profiled before (http://www.rickhanson.net/books/buddhas-brain). A wonderful, practical exploration of the spiritual grounded in science.

I welcome your thoughts and comments
